Fue un acto elegante y agradable. Me llam\u00f3 la atenci\u00f3n que, en un tabl\u00f3n de la entrada, figuraban veinte destacados pensadores y pol\u00edticos, presumiblemente personas con las que se identificaban los organizadores. Era un grupo intrigante.   <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocho hombres de negocios<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los pol\u00edticos eran Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, Lech Kaczy\u0144ski, Konrad Adenauer, John Howard y J\u00f3zef Pi\u0142sudski. Quiz\u00e1 habr\u00eda que incluir en este grupo al Papa Juan Pablo II y a William F. Buckley, que tambi\u00e9n estaban en la lista, aunque eran hombres de negocios. Thatcher fue la \u00fanica a la que tuve la suerte de conocer, como he descrito <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theconservative.online\/the-iron-lady-1925-2025\">en otro lugar<\/a>. Era sin duda una conservadora del libre mercado, o como dicen los estadounidenses, una fusionista. Confieso que no hab\u00eda o\u00eddo hablar antes de Prezzolini y Eminescu. En cambio, conoc\u00eda a Hayek y a Friedman tan bien como pod\u00eda esperar hacerlo un hombre mucho m\u00e1s joven en aquella \u00e9poca. Hayek vino a Islandia en 1980 y Friedman en 1984. Escrib\u00ed mi tesis en Oxford sobre Hayek, centr\u00e1ndome en su combinaci\u00f3n de ideas conservadoras y principios liberales cl\u00e1sicos, y por consiguiente mantuve muchas conversaciones con \u00e9l. Cuando fui Profesor Visitante en la Instituci\u00f3n Hoover en los a\u00f1os 80 y principios de los 90, Friedman era Senior Fellow all\u00ed, y almorzamos juntos muchas veces en el Stanford Faculty Club, normalmente acompa\u00f1ados por la esposa de Friedman, Rose, y su cu\u00f1ado, Aaron Director. Hayek y Friedman ten\u00edan personalidades diferentes. Hayek parec\u00eda y se comportaba exactamente como un arist\u00f3crata austriaco, educado y ligeramente distante. En cambio, Friedman era como un pararrayos: aunque era peque\u00f1o de estatura, en las recepciones siempre se sab\u00eda d\u00f3nde estaba porque era donde se hab\u00eda reunido el grupo m\u00e1s numeroso.        <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sowell y Scruton<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conoc\u00ed a Sowell brevemente en la reuni\u00f3n de la Sociedad Mont Pelerin de 1980 en Stanford. Tiene la capacidad de exponer sus puntos de vista con claridad y contundencia. Es un intelectual p\u00fablico del mismo modo que Voltaire en el siglo XVIII. Tambi\u00e9n me encontr\u00e9 con Scruton una sola vez, pero pasamos juntos una velada memorable tomando unas copas en un hotel de Bruselas, despu\u00e9s de una conferencia de New Direction. Scruton era un pensador extraordinario, un pol\u00edmata donde los haya. Me dijo que hac\u00eda poco que se hab\u00eda dado cuenta de la fuerza del argumento de Hayek a favor de la coordinaci\u00f3n espont\u00e1nea.     <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burke, de Tocqueville y von Mises<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estoy razonablemente familiarizado con el pensamiento de otros tres pensadores del tablero, Burke, de Tocqueville y von Mises, y de hecho dedico un cap\u00edtulo a cada uno de ellos en el <a href=\"https:\/\/newdirection.online\/2018-publications-pdf\/ND-ThinkersVol1-2020f.pdf\">libro<\/a> que escrib\u00ed en 2020 para Nueva Direcci\u00f3n sobre veinticuatro pensadores conservadores. Aunque de Maistre era un agudo observador de la fragilidad humana, no me resulta, sin embargo, simp\u00e1tico. Tambi\u00e9n debo decir que personalmente habr\u00eda puesto en el tablero al distinguido economista Luigi Einaudi (Presidente de Italia en 1948-1955) en lugar de a Croce.  <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discurso de Meloni<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00bfQu\u00e9 une a los veinte individuos de la junta? No estoy seguro de que una \u00fanica definici\u00f3n pueda englobarlos, aunque la mayor\u00eda apoyar\u00eda la propiedad privada, el gobierno limitado, el libre comercio y el respeto a las tradiciones. Es que no importa menos qui\u00e9nes somos que lo que podemos tener. Todos necesitamos un sentido de pertenencia, la pertenencia a una comunidad, la ampliaci\u00f3n de nuestro yo individual, en familias, c\u00edrculos de amigos, barrios, lugares de trabajo, equipos, asociaciones y, de hecho, naciones.
