La Primera Ministra italiana, Giorgia Meloni, galardonada con el Premio de Pol\u00edtica, pronunci\u00f3 un breve pero contundente discurso en un ingl\u00e9s fluido. Se est\u00e1 perfilando como la principal estadista europea, con una visi\u00f3n conservadora m\u00e1s clara que Merz en Alemania o Macron en Francia. Pero mientras la escuchaba a ella y a los dem\u00e1s oradores, record\u00e9 tres visitas a la Ciudad Eterna desde mi remoto pa\u00eds azotado por el viento en el extremo noroccidental de Europa, Islandia.   <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gudrid en Am\u00e9rica del Norte<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La primera visita la realiz\u00f3 a finales de la d\u00e9cada de 1020 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bokafelagid.is\/products\/the-saga-of-gudrid\">Gudrid Thorbjornsdaughter<\/a> (c. 980-c. 1050), una mujer de car\u00e1cter fuerte como Thatcher y Meloni. Nacida en el oeste de Islandia, Gudrid emigr\u00f3 con su padre a Groenlandia a finales de la d\u00e9cada de 990 (en island\u00e9s no hay apellidos, s\u00f3lo un nombre y luego informaci\u00f3n sobre de qui\u00e9n es hijo o hija, por ejemplo Gudrid hija de Thorbjorn, Einar hijo de Benedikt). A los 27 a\u00f1os, Gudrid conoci\u00f3 a un mercader island\u00e9s, Thorfinn Thordson, que se cas\u00f3 con ella. En la primavera de 1008, junto con otros groenlandeses, decidieron explorar un pa\u00eds reci\u00e9n descubierto en el Oeste, navegando hasta all\u00ed en cuatro barcos. El invierno siguiente permanecieron en lo que hoy es la bah\u00eda de Fundy (entre Nuevo Brunswick y Nueva Escocia), donde Gudrid dio a luz a un hijo, Snorri Thorfinnson, el primer ni\u00f1o de ascendencia europea nacido en Norteam\u00e9rica. En 1009, Gudrid y Thorfinn decidieron navegar hacia el sur y explorar m\u00e1s el pa\u00eds. Llegaron a lo que hoy es el r\u00edo Hudson, donde permanecieron un tiempo. Pero a finales de 1010, los colonos se enfrentaron a algunos nativos. Al darse cuenta de que en cualquier conflicto les superar\u00edan ampliamente en n\u00famero, regresaron a Groenlandia en el verano de 1011.        <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gudrid en Roma<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Al cabo de un tiempo, Gudrid y Thorfinn se trasladaron a una granja del norte de Islandia. Cuando Thorfinn muri\u00f3 y su hijo mayor, Snorri, se cas\u00f3, Gudrid decidi\u00f3 peregrinar a Roma. All\u00ed pudo ver muchos monumentos que segu\u00edan en pie, como el Castel d&#8217;Angelo (originalmente un mausoleo imperial), el Pante\u00f3n (originalmente un templo romano) y el Coliseo. De anciana, Gudrid, que ya era la persona m\u00e1s viajera del mundo, contaba a sus nietos historias de sus viajes. Menos de dos siglos despu\u00e9s, estos relatos se escribieron a instancias de sus descendientes, que eran destacados eclesi\u00e1sticos.    <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Un poeta reflexiona sobre los romanos<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La segunda visita fue la del poeta, abogado y hombre de negocios <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com.br\/books\/about\/Harp_of_the_North.html?id=n-jUAAAAMAAJ\">Einar Benediktsson<\/a> (1864-1940) en 1903. Una noche, mientras se encontraba en el crep\u00fasculo junto al r\u00edo T\u00edber, compuso uno de sus poemas m\u00e1s conocidos, Una noche en Roma: \u00abEl T\u00edber tranquilo hacia el mar fluye lentamente\u00bb. Reflexion\u00f3 sobre la historia de la Rep\u00fablica Romana y su degeneraci\u00f3n durante el Imperio, llegando a la conclusi\u00f3n de que lo que quedaba de valor era el patrimonio cultural. El poema est\u00e1 lleno de met\u00e1foras e im\u00e1genes po\u00e9ticas sorprendentes. Einar compuso otro poema sobre su visita a Roma, Coliseo, en el que hac\u00eda hincapi\u00e9 en la crueldad de las representaciones en el antiguo anfiteatro, mientras \u00abBestia y hombre se bat\u00edan en duelo\u00bb.   <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Un ingeniero al borde de las l\u00e1grimas<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La tercera visita fue la de un destacado pol\u00edtico e ingeniero, J\u00f3n Thorl\u00e1ksson (1877-1935), primer ministro de Islandia en 1926-1927 y fundador del Partido de la Independencia, conservador-liberal, que domin\u00f3 durante mucho tiempo la pol\u00edtica islandesa. En 1923, \u00e9l y su esposa viajaron a Italia en una luna de miel tard\u00eda. Diez a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, como alcalde de Reikiavik, la capital de Islandia, J\u00f3n asisti\u00f3 el 6 de julio de 1933 a una cena en honor del mariscal del aire italiano Italo Balbo, que hab\u00eda hecho escala en Islandia en un crucero transatl\u00e1ntico. Balbo hablaba poco ingl\u00e9s, as\u00ed que conversaron en lat\u00edn, que ambos hab\u00edan aprendido en la escuela. J\u00f3n cont\u00f3 a Balbo que, en su visita a Roma, hab\u00eda estado a punto de llorar por la destrucci\u00f3n que el tiempo hab\u00eda infligido a lo que hab\u00eda sido el Foro Romano.
