Odgovoran za 3,7 posto ukupnih emisija CO2 u Europi i 13 posto emisija transportnog sektora, ima koristi od oko 24 milijarde eura godi\u0161nje u subvencijama poreza na fosilna goriva i raznim vrstama izuze\u0107a te je jedini sektor za koji nema stvarnog smanjenja emisija ciljevi su jo\u0161 postavljeni. Osim utjecaja na klimu, sumporni oksidi, du\u0161ik i \u010destice koje ispu\u0161taju brodski motori dok miruju na obali s upaljenim motorima uzrokuju 60 milijardi eura zdravstvenih tro\u0161kova i oko 50 000 prijevremenih smrti godi\u0161nje u Europi. Prema studiji IMO-a (Me\u0111unarodne pomorske organizacije), emisije CO2 iz pomorskog prometa mogle bi se pove\u0107ati u cijelom svijetu izme\u0111u 50% i 250% do 2050. godine i ugroziti ciljeve Pari\u0161kog sporazuma. Do danas jo\u0161 uvijek ne postoje dovoljno razvijene i ekonomski odr\u017eive tehnologije za dekarbonizaciju pomorskog prometa tijekom faze otpreme, ali hladno gla\u010danje je spremno smanjiti emisije na nulu ili blizu nje tijekom zaustavljanja u luci. Hladno peglanje sastoji se od povezivanja broda s pristani\u0161tem elektri\u010dnim kabelom i na taj na\u010din opskrbe elektri\u010dnom energijom potrebnom za operacije potrebne za parkiranje, utovar i istovar broda i, naravno, omogu\u0107avanje svih putni\u010dkih usluga, \u010dak i kada su motori u pogonu. isklju\u010den, \u0161to danas nije mogu\u0107e. Tehnologija se ve\u0107 koristi u lukama G\u00f6teborg, Los Angeles i Marseilles i pokazuje se funkcionalnom i uspje\u0161nom, kao i ekonomski isplativom za one koji je koriste. Ako se ipak \u010dini da je za luke prona\u0111eno kratkoro\u010dno i srednjoro\u010dno rje\u0161enje, situacija s emisijama s brodova, posebice kruzera, tijekom plovidbe puno je slo\u017eenija. Brodovlasnici se trenutno odlu\u010dno okre\u0107u opskrbi svojih brodova ukapljenim prirodnim plinom, poznatim kao LNG. Razlog za ovu odluku je to \u0161to se uvelike smanjuje emisija sumpornih oksida (SOx), \u0161to omogu\u0107uje uskla\u0111ivanje s va\u017ee\u0107im zakonskim propisima koji reguliraju sadr\u017eaj ovog elementa u brodskim gorivima. Prema nedavnom istra\u017eivanju T&amp;E, Transport &amp; Environment, &#8220;Brodske tvrtke koje ula\u017eu u LNG me\u0111u njegovim zaslugama isti\u010du 20% smanjenje emisija CO\u2082, ali iz prora\u010duna izostavljaju ogromne emisije metana, plina koji je 82,5 puta ve\u0107i od klime -promjenjivi potencijal uglji\u010dnog dioksida, \u010dak i kad bi se pove\u0107ala u\u010dinkovitost brodskih motora, \u0161to bi dovelo do smanjenja neizgorjelih istjecanja, koristi u pogledu emisija stakleni\u010dkih plinova bi i dalje bile ograni\u010dene Ciljevi smanjenja emisija ugljika u pomorskom sektoru u okviru \u201eklimatskog paketa\u201d Europske unije trebali bi potaknuti odlazak od lo\u017eivog ulja, brodskog goriva koje najvi\u0161e zaga\u0111uje okoli\u0161 i koje se trenutno najvi\u0161e koristi jeftinija alternativa: prema procjeni T&amp;E, vi\u0161e od jedne tre\u0107ine europskih brodova moglo bi se pokretati LNG-om 2025., \u0161to bi u osnovi bio na\u010din da se zaobi\u0111e problem, ali ne i rje\u0161enje. Potpora pomorskim tvrtkama je, me\u0111utim, klimatski paket koji je EU pokrenula za ovaj sektor, paket koji ne predvi\u0111a nultu emisiju do 2050. Zatim, tu je jo\u0161 jedan problem: LNG neki me\u0111unarodno nazivaju rje\u0161enjem za premo\u0161\u0107ivanje dok \u010dekaju druge tehnologije koje ne zaga\u0111uju okoli\u0161 koje treba razviti.                 Ipak, \u010dini se da to nije slu\u010daj: brodski dizel daleko manje zaga\u0111uje okoli\u0161 od LNG-a. Kad bi brodovi koristili ovu vrstu goriva u pu\u010dini u usporedbi s te\u0161kim lo\u017eivim uljem koje se trenutno koristi, u\u010dinak bi bio drasti\u010dno manji \u010dak i od LNG-a. Stoga se \u010dini da je &#8220;revolucija&#8221; prema ovoj vrsti goriva izbor diktiran isklju\u010divo potrebom da se udovolji vi\u0161e ideolo\u0161kim i iracionalnim aspektima fanatika ekolo\u0161ke tranzicije, a ne bilo kakvom stvarnom dobrobiti za okoli\u0161. Mudrije bi bilo, tako\u0111er prema mnogim insajderima i stru\u010dnjacima u sektoru, ubrzati prema istinski zelenim gorivima kao \u0161to je vodik, ovaj s gotovo nultim u\u010dinkom i beskrajno ni\u017eim tro\u0161kovima od LNG-a i dizela.
