Statements by Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament
«We will discuss about fighting disinformation and hybrid threats. These are no longer remote risks, it is something that the European Parliament is particularly committed on working with stakeholders to make sure that these are stamped out because they are a real threat to democracy. Wars are not only fought on the ground, but they’re also fought in the digital sphere and they undermine and target the most vulnerable parts of our society. So in this regard, our commitment is also to work with social platforms; these are our partners in making sure that tools that were created to bring people together are not abused by malign democracies.»
Statements by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission
«And we will discuss mainly the topic of an independent Europe. We have to reduce our overdependencies in specifically three areas. The first is energy. We are too much overdependent on imported fossil fuels and therefore always dependent on dormant type global markets. We have to increase our assets at home in Europe, and these are the renewable energies and nuclear energy because they are homegrown, they are cheaper and they are reliable. Second topic where we need more independence is defense and security. We have to step up our military capabilities to be able to defend and protect ourselves. There is a vast amount of money available for the investment, now we really have to step up and speed up the production process for military capabilities. And the third element is the topic of a reliable supply chains. For that, we’re reaching out to like-minded countries to have free trade agreements. We just concluded one with Latin America, but also now with India or Australia, and I will go to Mexico.»
Statements by Giorgia Meloni, President of the Council of Ministers of Italy
«We were speaking today about a polycrisis, okay? But what does it mean polycrisis? I mean, I think it is not simply that we are facing lots of crises together. That’s it. The problem is all those crises are related one to the other and feed one the other. And I think it is very important we understand that, also to face the fact that we cannot simply take care of one or two facets of this crisis, but we have to tackle them all.»
