G7 Summit in Evian

The President of the European Council, António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, attended the G7 summit in Evian, France, representing the European Union. The discussions focused on the role of multilateralism as a tool to address current international challenges and ensure global economic stability, against a backdrop of geopolitical uncertainty, trade tensions, and widening imbalances.

If you look at the year 2025, this will be remembered as the year where for the first time ever, all member states had a trade deficit with China. The European Union recorded its largest ever trade deficit of 360 billion euros. This is of course not sustainable.

Subsequently, we work in close cooperation with our global partners. I welcome the decision to expand the discussions of this summit to partners from all over the world. The leaders of India, Brazil, South Korea, Kenya, and Egypt will participate in part of our discussions, and these countries have contributed to the preparatory work. The European Union is developing one of the most extensive networks of trade agreements in the world, already covering 84 countries across the planet.
