According to data published by the Economist, in the United States the unemployment rate among recent computer science graduates has reached 7%, while among philosophy graduates it stands at 5.1%. Although this figure does not tell the whole story of employment, it points to a significant trend: humanities skills are once again in demand precisely in the most advanced sectors of the economy.
Confirmation comes from Silicon Valley. Companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind are strengthening their teams with philosophers, linguists, lawyers and ethics experts. This is not a choice driven by image, but by a concrete need. The more powerful artificial intelligence becomes, the more problems emerge that engineering alone cannot solve.
Until a few years ago, the challenge was to develop increasingly high-performing models. Today, the question is different. It is not enough to ask what a machine is capable of doing: we must decide how it should behave when it enters the daily lives of millions of people.
Every artificial intelligence system must interpret requests, avoid discrimination, comply with legal principles, engage with moral values and handle unforeseen situations. Addressing these issues requires skills that go beyond mathematics and computer science. It requires people capable of reflecting on language, law, ethics and the social consequences of technology.

This transformation should also prompt reflection in the worlds of education and politics. For years, public debate has pitted scientific disciplines against the humanities, as if the latter belonged to the past and the former were the only key to progress. The most important innovations emerge from the intersection of different skills. The engineer develops the model, the lawyer assesses its compliance with regulations, the linguist improves the quality of interaction, and the philosopher helps reflect on the ethical implications and the goals technology should pursue. None of these figures is sufficient on their own.
Artificial intelligence can process data, recognize patterns and make predictions with extraordinary effectiveness. But it has no sense of justice, does not understand the value of human dignity and cannot independently determine which ends should be pursued. It can identify the most efficient means, but not the good toward which those means should be directed. That responsibility belongs to human beings.
This is where the value of the European humanist tradition becomes clear. For more than two thousand years, our civilization has reflected on the relationship between freedom and responsibility, law and justice, technology and ethics. This is not a heritage that belongs in museums; it still represents the compass we need to govern innovation without losing sight of the centrality of the individual.
The real challenge, therefore, is not to choose between humanism and technology. It is to prevent technology from becoming an end in itself. Every form of progress needs a moral horizon to guide it; otherwise, it risks producing increasingly sophisticated tools without any sense of direction.
This rediscovery of humanism cannot stop at the laboratories where algorithms are designed. It must accompany the entire technological journey, from design to the effects technology produces on society, relationships and work.
The same applies to businesses. A company is made up of more than processes, software and performance indicators. It is a community of people, with responsibilities, skills, relationships and aspirations. Its strength depends not only on organizational efficiency, but on its ability to value human capital, build trust and cultivate a shared sense of the common good. Viewing workers merely as resources to be optimized means impoverishing the company itself.
This is precisely where philosophy becomes a concrete resource again. Not as an academic exercise, but as a form of knowledge capable of understanding human complexity, guiding decisions and reminding us that technology is always a tool and never an end. In an age that tends to measure everything through algorithms and performance, recovering humanistic thought means reaffirming an essential principle of Western civilization: it is human beings who give meaning to technology, not technology that gives meaning to human beings.
The message coming from Silicon Valley is, perhaps unintentionally, a confirmation of this truth. The very companies building the future of artificial intelligence recognize that no innovation can replace judgment, responsibility and conscience. The true competitive advantage of the 21st century will not simply be the ability to develop more powerful machines, but to preserve a culture that places people, freedom and the value of communities at its center. Because progress is genuine only when it remains at the service of humanity rather than seeking to take its place.
