The abominable events that the whole world witnessed taking place in Ceuta, Spain, reminded us of the infamous phrase that former German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in August 2015 – “Wir schaffen das” (We will manage it). Spoken – not just once – in a similarly extremely turbulent time, when massive waves of migrants from third world countries were flooding into Europe, Angela Merkel’s words have since echoed around the globe. What was described as a declaration of confidence and moral strength has, in fact, become the first act of a play that is revealing itself to be increasingly terrifying – the European Union’s open-border policy and its disastrous and sinister consequences. Eleven years ago, hundreds of thousands of invaders were welcomed with open arms by the optimistic Ms. Merkel, who was very confident that the situation could be properly managed and that everything would be just fine. However, nothing was fine then, and certainly nothing is fine today.
Angela Merkel, with her notorious words, opened the gates of Germany – and, in effect, of the Schengen Area – to be stormed by invaders. Through a cynicism disguised as “confidence,” betraying not only her own citizens but all of Europe, Ms. Merkel paved the way for future invasions. We all know the cost of this self-destructive policy: parents and children who have seen their own neighborhoods transformed into something unrecognizable, women who no longer leave their homes after dark, rising crime, insane social disturbances, and young people who have discovered that talent and skills no longer hold any value in the face of the new “supreme” standard – the well-being of minorities at the expense of the majority. “Wir schaffen das” was a pipe dream, but an extremely expensive and frightening one.
At the end of July 2026, eleven years after “Wir schaffen das,” the entire world witnessed the horrific scenes in Ceuta, when more than 60,000 migrants from neighboring Morocco assaulted this small Spanish enclave in North Africa, inhabited by just over 84,000 people. In this coastal town, part of the European Union, chaos erupted within just a few hours. A massive influx of migrants put pressure on European territory, shocked the civilian population, and exposed how vulnerable a EU member state is when faced with such a severe incident.
When one’s own territory is left at the mercy of invaders, this is a sure path to disintegration and catastrophe. The question any leader should ask is this: to what extent have these massive waves of migrants contributed to the prosperity, security, and cohesion of the countries they have flooded into?The answer? Certainly not the one that official propaganda wants you to believe.
Beyond the evident crisis in border control, Europe is facing a tragedy of its own civilization. The sinister cliché spoken by Angela Merkel in 2015 – an example of her contemptuous view toward her own people – sounds like a thunderstorm today. Ceuta is not the end. But it could be the beginning of the end if the real lesson is ignored. As long as the European pseudo-elites fail to treat mass migration for what it truly is – an imminent threat to security, identity, and sovereignty – tragedies like Ceuta will keep happening.
“Wir schaffen das” has shown just how enormous and terrifying the gap is between words and real life. The horrible experience in Ceuta, far from being “normalized,” as the authorities claim, should serve as a disturbing alarm that rings out in the silence of the night. When borders are violated, sovereignty is nothing but an illusion. Defending one’s own borders means defending one’s own identity. The choice is plane and simple: either we defend who we are and what we believe in, or we stand by, paralyzed, and witness the end of our societies and our very civilization.
